Cities welcome refugees - Leipzig

Thomas Fabian, deputy mayor of Leipzig, spoke to EUROCITIES about how his city is responding to the arrival of refugees. He describes the importance not only of emergency assistance but of long term integration. Leipzig is one of a number of EUROCITIES members who are responding and adapting to the current influx of refugees and asylum seekers. EUROCITIES on better regulation

We argue for significant strengthening of the European Commission's proposals on better regulation, with greater emphasis on the role of cities in the EU and the growing debate on an EU urban agenda. In our statement we recommend a stronger urban dimension to impact assessments and the need to capitalise more effectively on local and regional expertise to find better ways of implementing policy.

EUROCITIES calls for direct access to EU migration funds

Rita Viljanen, deputy mayor of Helsinki, called for direct access for cities to EU Asylum, Migration & Integration Funding (AMIF) during a panel discussion hosted by European Commission DG Home on 29 September. She described the difficulties cities face in accessing funds due to multiple levels of administration and lengthy processes, and called for a change to the AMIF regulation which would allow cities to apply for emergency funding.

Culture for Cities and Regions study visit in Nantes

Nantes hosted the first study visit under our Culture for Cities and Regions initiative, focusing on how culture and the creative industries have helped regenerate a former industrial area. Nantes demonstrated how the creative and cultural industries have helped create new vibrant neighbourhoods and revived economic and cultural activity in the Ile de Nantes area.

Joint ceremony launching new integrated Covenant of Mayors on Climate and Energy

The European Commission announced a new integrated Covenant of Mayors on Climate and Energy at a ceremony in Brussels on 15 October. Representatives from towns and cities leading the way on climate adaptation met in the European Parliament for the ceremony, which saw the existing Covenant of Mayors and Mayors Adapt initiatives merged into a single, more ambitious initiative whereby signatories commit to reducing carbon emissions by at least 40% by 2030.
